Artist Statement

I enjoy playing with the idea of choices and their consequences - urban sprawl and its impact on our environment, man in relationship to nature and spirituality, and transitions from darkness into light. My love of nature and interest in photography, psychology and architecture impacts the content in my work. The use of personal symbols and photographs of my own shadow allows me to be not only an elemental observer but also a participant in my creations and helps me tell my story to the viewer.

Susanne Belcher is a native Californian and award-winning semi-abstract mixed media artist. Her signature strength is her ability to incorporate symbolism with painting, photography, collage and sometimes writing. Using her own shadow along with repetitious images as personal symbols, architectural elements along with nature subjects, she creates her own unique architecture - sophisticated, intricate, complex, often three-dimensional, surreal and mysterious.

Susanne, a former health care professional, has a doctorate in Psychology, is an ardent nature lover, and is an active member of Women Painters West, Collage Artists of America, The Fine Arts Club of Pasadena, Valley Watercolor Society and The Thousand Oaks Art Association. She has exhibited in Germany, galleries throughout Southern California, and her work is held in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe. She was a founding partner and represented artist of the former Abbot Kinney Art Gallery (Venice, CA)and is co-author of a recently published book "Looking for 527" (available on
